Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that actor Billy Crudup was their first choice to play Jim Hopper before David Harbour ultimately landed the role. Crudup declined the part as he was not doing much television work at the time, leading the Duffers to cast Harbour after seeing a single audition tape that immediately convinced them he was right for the character.
