Colossal Biosciences, a company founded to resurrect extinct animals through gene editing and embryology, announced in April 2025 that it successfully created dire wolves by extracting DNA from ancient specimens, editing gray wolf cells, and implanting modified embryos. The breakthrough follows the company's earlier creation of woolly mice and comes as scientists work to preserve the nearly extinct northern white rhino through IVF embryos and artificial reproduction techniques.
